Landscape East & West

Design

Just as you wouldn’t think of building your dream home without a house plan, a landscape plan is the essential first step in creating the landscaping to complement your home.

A Good Landscape Plan Should Include:

  • A design drawn to scale with the scale prominently noted.
  • The botanical name of all plants and trees. Common names can also be given but many plants have more than one common name, so common names alone should be avoided.
  • The specific size and quantity of each plant. Plants should be chosen first on the basis of the growing conditions in the Pacific Northwest and second on color, texture, and shape.
  • Plants should be drawn to scale and reflect, as close as possible, the mature size so you can easily see how they will look when fully grown.
  • The location and layout of all hardscapes—walls, driveways, walks, patios, decks, and steps—existing and/or to be built should be indicated as well as other construction details, including boulders, rocks, and stepping stones.

Choosing the Right Designer

[photo: designer]Every designer has a different approach and style and many specialize in a certain look—such as English flower borders or Japanese gardens. The best way to determine if the designer is right for you is to see their portfolio and ask for references.
