As with most great things, it’s best to start at the bottom with a solid base. That’s why we’re installing paver patios for many of our customers who are looking to add a custom-designed patio that’s built to last and requires minimal maintenance.

What is a Paver Patio?

A paver patio is an outdoor living space constructed using interlocking concrete or porcelain pavers that can be customized to fit any space and integrate with the surrounding landscape. The pavers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures and can be laid in a specific pattern or arranged to provide endless design possibilities. Whether you want to define edges, highlight specific areas, or just add visual interest to your yard with a unique pattern, the pavers can meet your vision.

Beyond design, paver patios offer several other advantages over traditional patio materials:

  • Durability: Paver stones are known for their strength and longevity, making them suitable for outdoor use. They can withstand heavy foot traffic, harsh weather conditions, and temperature fluctuations without cracking or deteriorating.
  • Low maintenance: Compared to other outdoor flooring options like wood or concrete, paver patios require minimal maintenance. They are resistant to stains and can be easily cleaned with water and mild detergent. Additionally, if individual stones become damaged, they can be replaced without having to redo the entire patio
  • Enhanced curb appeal: A well-designed paver patio can significantly enhance the visual appeal of a property. It creates an inviting outdoor space for entertaining guests, relaxing, or enjoying meals, thereby increasing the overall attractiveness and value of the home.
  • Environmentally friendly: Paver patios are an eco-friendly option because rainwater permeates through the gaps between the stones, reducing runoff and helping to replenish groundwater. They also do not require harsh chemicals for maintenance.

Installation Process for Paver Patios

Paver patios can be laid on a variety of surfaces, including sand, gravel, or compacted soil. How we install the pavers depends on the material, the soil conditions on site, and how the homeowner plans to use the space. We often need specialized equipment, such as a saw to cut porcelain, and an excavator to get the job done right. From the excavation and base prep to the setting of the paver, care must be taken to ensure the pavers don’t settle and cause a waviness to the surface that can look bad and pose a safety hazard. Your best option is to leave the installation to the experts at Landscape East & West. We have a proven system that we’ve employed across many yards. When you choose us for your patio installation, our experts will help create the patio of your dreams from concept to completion.

Installing a paver patio involves several steps, and requires careful planning and execution to ensure a durable and attractive finished product. Our team starts by measuring and marking the area where the patio will be installed, considering factors like drainage, slope, and existing landscaping features.

The marked area is then excavated to a depth of around 6 to 8 inches making sure the area is sloped away from nearby structures to facilitate proper drainage. For most landscapes, we bring in an excavator to speed up the process of removing the soil. In a typical job, we may need to remove up to 3 yards of soil and then move it offsite.

Next, we cover the soil with a filter fabric to keep the soil separated from our crushed rock base. We then fill the excavated area with 4” of base materials such as crushed stone or gravel, and compact the base with our compactor to create a stable foundation.  A layer of sand is evenly spread over the compacted base and screeded to form the final bed for the pavers.

With the site prepped, we begin laying the pavers, using a rubber mallet to tap each one into place to ensure they are level with the surrounding pavers. The pavers are cut as needed with a saw to fit along edges or around obstacles. Once pavers are sized, a soldier course of pavers is typically installed around the perimeter to provide better stability. To keep the pavers in place, edge restraints are installed along the perimeter

When all the pavers are in place, the entire surface is compacted. Polymeric joint sand is then spread over the surface and swept into the joints between the pavers to lock them in. Our warranty on workmanship guarantees our installation will be of the highest quality, giving you the perfect look and feel for years to come.

From the design process to the installation, everything was professionally done. The designer listened carefully to us and was able to make adjustments pretty seamlessly. The project manager communicated well and was involved daily. The crew worked hard and shared their knowledge and ideas freely. It was clear that the culture of the organization was one of mutual respect.

Design Options and Trends

Our designers will work with you to explore your ideas and understand the space and your style preference. With the overwhelming selection available, we assist in narrowing down the options to those that match your needs. Large format pavers, mixing and matching of patio field and border colors, and the use of different colors, formats, and textures are a few of the options we take into account when designing a patio. We also consider the existing hard surfaces when designing to maintain a more cohesive look throughout the space. With pavers varying in size from about 6” x 9” up to a whopping 42” x 42”, where and how they can be laid is endless.

Most of our clients select concrete pavers that provide more design options than natural stone, or they may even choose porcelain pavers similar to what’s used inside homes. Porcelain has a higher cost, but it is more durable than concrete since the only thing that can scratch it is a diamond blade and it’s virtually maintenance-free because it’s non-porous leaving no water inside to foster moss growth. Whichever paver is chosen it will be durable and able to withstand heavy foot traffic, and the harsh weather conditions and temperature changes of the Pacific Northwest. FAQ

We can purchase materials from any of the paver suppliers. We do have our preferences with respect to the vendors we use based on quality, availability, and design flexibility.

Yes. If we are able to get a truck to your site, we can install a paver patio.

That depends on the project size and the condition of the ground the pavers will be laid on. A 300 square foot patio would take about a week’s worth of work, but don’t hold us to that. During our free consultation, we’re happy to provide you with a time estimate after we’ve narrowed down the project scope.

There’s no tried and true way to estimate because there are many variables. The type of paver you choose, how large it will be, how level the ground is and how many roots or rocks might be in place…the list goes on. Your best bet is to contact us for a free consultation and we can help narrow down the choices and estimate a cost.

If you scour the web you'll see the addition of a paver patio adding anywhere from 10-60% of the paver installation cost to your home value. We’d estimate it’s somewhere in between and depends on how large it is, materials chosen, how well it fits in with your existing landscape, and how well it’s installed.

I am pleased to offer an exemplary recommendation to Landscape East and West. I met with the designer to talk through the plan to figure the functionality as well as the aesthetic appeal of a driveway extension. She asked questions that other bidders did not. It was obvious that she was invested in the project's success. Nathan was assigned to oversee the amazing workers, and he updated me each Friday as to what got accomplished vs what remained to be executed. The workers themselves were totally professional and disciplined- when they finished they made it look fantastic!! I so appreciated the check-ins, confirmations, and commitment that these individuals made to my project. Kudos to Landscape East and West! Very impressed!!
