A landscape, no matter how big or small, is not complete without a garden to soften the edges of a patio or be the main focal point of the yard. A garden will bring interest, life, and harmony to your outdoor space, taking your yard from bland to blooming.
Landscape East & West is ready to assist you in designing your ideal garden, whether edible, formal, or pollinator. Through our decades in business, we’ve planned and planted every type of garden our customers have imagined. We like to think we’ve helped beautify the greater Portland region, one yard at a time.

Types of Garden Styles We Design

The garden you choose should reflect your tastes and style, while considering what your landscape can accommodate. There are endless possibilities from sunny spaces that help vegetables and flowers thrive, to shady side yards that call for more native plants or hardscapes. We help transform your garden vision into reality.

English Cottage

Informal and romantic, this garden overflows with flowers. Climbing roses cling to trellises or arbors, while meandering paths are bordered by fragrant lavender or eye-catching foxglove. Meet your friends by the garden gate for a stroll through this quintessential garden.

English Formal

The fantasy of an organizer, formal gardens feature symmetrical layouts with neatly trimmed hedges. Boxwoods and patches of well-mown grass come to mind with fountains and topiaries to add interest. Streamlined and uncluttered, each plant has a purpose and place.

Japanese

Serenity and harmony are the goals with a Japanese garden that reflects the symbolism of fire and water elements, captures the natural beauty of rocks, moss, and ornamental grasses, and adds culturally significant bonsai, cherry trees, and maples.

Fragrant

Meant to capture your senses, the fragrant garden relies on flowering plants like gardenias, roses, and lilacs for beauty and scent, adding layers of fragrance with herbs like lavender, rosemary, and mint. Spend time here sitting in a gazebo or taking a turn on a swing.

Pollinator or Natural

Plants here are meant to attract wildlife, mimic what’s found in nature, and minimize the need for maintenance. Native grasses, butterfly bushes, wildflowers, and herbs create different colors, shapes, and heights to attract a diverse group of pollinators.

Rock Gardens

Low maintenance, drought tolerant, and designed to capture the feel of a mountain environment, rock gardens primarily feature rocks placed in an artistic design and can be flanked by smaller stones, succulents and native grasses. Minimalist and serene.

Edible Garden

Knowing the source of your food and enjoying the intense flavor of fresh from the garden inspires many edible gardeners to plant spring peas, summer tomatoes, winter lettuce, fall fruit trees, and year-round herbs. Yard work never tasted so good.

Rain Gardens

A rain garden is functional, designed to capture runoff and reduce erosion, but it can also be a vibrant addition to a landscape. Native plants that thrive in both wet and dry seasons, dry streambeds, and various rocks and stones complete the look and purpose.

Our Approach to Plant Selection & Design

Through years of experience, we’ve honed our skills at finding the perfect plants for your garden’s unique climate and soil. We take nothing to chance, relying on purposeful planting for year-round beauty

The plants we recommend are tailored to the microclimate of your yard, considering features such as sunlight, exposure, existing structures and trees, and soils. We’ll discuss what works best against what you envision to ensure all needs are met. There are always beautiful and functional alternatives to help you achieve the formal, Japanese, or rain garden you desire.

Looking for low maintenance? We’ll showcase native plants to the Pacific Northwest that can withstand dry summers and wet winters with minimal care. We’ll also address those spots where nothing seems to grow by adding groundcover, native grasses, or hardscapes.

The best yards are the ones that look inviting year-round. We’ll consider the foliage, flowers, and bark of the plants, choosing ones that offer visual interest through all seasons.

Garden Design and Build Process

Your journey to a new garden begins with a complimentary site visit and consultation where we inventory your yard and discuss your vision, taking time to listen to how you want your yard to function as well as to look.

Next, we’ll begin creating a concept plan and plant palette presentation. All those ideas you had will be put on paper so you can visualize how your yard will be transformed.

After showing you the initial plan and offering additional consultation, we’ll delve deeper into a full landscape plan that includes irrigation, soil management, and any additional hardscapes.

With plans in hand, our installers will get their hands dirty in your yard, digging, planting, and bringing your garden to life.

Once the work is done, we’ll discuss ongoing plant care and maintenance needs to ensure your new garden thrives throughout the seasons and for years to come.
