Landscape Trends for 2026

February 26, 2026

Creating your ideal outdoor space is mostly a matter of personal taste. Just like those fashionistas who boldly wore straight-leg jeans during the skinny jean craze, homeowners who choose individuality may find that bucking trends makes them more comfortable and happy.

At Landscape East & West, we know what’s trending, but stand by our commitment to design an outdoor space that best matches your vision, not your neighbor’s. However, exploring what’s trending can expand your knowledge of what’s possible and help you find a new landscape style that’s a perfect match for your tastes and needs. What do the yards of 2026 hold?

Relaxation Zones

As the world seems to be moving at breakneck speed, many homeowners are looking for a chance to step away from the frenzy and relax. That may be why the most prominent 2026 landscape trend is cozy, intimate outdoor spaces that promote a sense of calm. The desire is to create an outdoor area that’s as comfortable to retreat to as your living room.

Secluded nooks, firepits, and functional gardens are replacing large hardscapes for entertaining, grand fireplaces, and showy landscapes. People want to stay at home, invite a few friends over for drinks around the fire, and spend lazy weekend afternoons in the natural setting of their own backyards. Defined outdoor rooms with integrated seating, covered structures with fire features, and outdoor kitchens provide year-round outdoor relaxation. As the trend toward yards as retreats continues, more homeowners are requesting wellness features such as cold plunge pools and meditation or yoga spaces. Landscaping isn’t just about plants anymore; it’s about functional space design.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly

Climate and resource awareness are driving the trend toward homeowners who want more efficient irrigation and lighting systems that reduce water and electricity use. Smart systems are gaining traction with their ease of programming through convenient apps that allow users to fine-tune when and where their lighting and irrigation operate. Modern systems let users tailor watering needs to the weather, monitor soil, and discreetly control water and fire features for added ambiance at the tap of a screen.

To further reduce water usage, native and climate-adapted plants are growing more popular, as are rain gardens and pollinator gardens that use eco-wise plantings to reduce runoff and improve biodiversity. Bold, drought-tolerant flowers are having their day. Healthier ecosystems are being nurtured in today’s backyards.

The trend towards native planting is complemented by a broader shift toward landscapes with a more natural look and feel. We’re seeing homeowners choose grasses and perennials that create movement, seasonal interest, and offer a naturalistic plant palette. We’re also seeing more interest in dry streambeds that add a natural element, whether filled with water or not. The shift away from more formal, rigid yards toward more natural landscapes also reduces maintenance requirements, which is another 2026 trend.

Nature-Inspired Durability

Maintenance needs are influencing the materials used in today’s landscape designs. Not only is reduced maintenance driving choices, but the ROI of features with longevity and low ongoing costs is also factored in. Durable hardscape elements like porcelain pavers, composite decking, permeable stone and gravel pathways, and even a greater use of steel are appearing in more outdoor spaces.  Steel, in particular, is gaining popularity for adding character and style without taking away from a natural feel.

Similarly, the color palette we’re seeing is muted, earthy tones that match the turn towards the use of natural textures such as stone, wood, and brick to replace the more modern concrete that had its heyday a few years ago. The muted tones extend to the plantings as well, with soft pinks and lavenders replacing more bold reds and yellows to further create a sense of calm.

These trends reflect broader shifts in how people live, care for the environment, and use outdoor space, making landscapes functional, beautiful, and meaningful in equal measure. However, we know that the landscape we create will be from your vision, whether that matches today’s trends or reflects a vibe that’s all your own. A customized landscape that gives you the outdoor retreat you crave is the only end result we want to see.
